Snapper Rocks to Monkey Mia

Day 95 - Snapper Rocks to Monkey Mia

Snapper Rocks, Denham, Monkey Mia

Tuesday, 23 April 2013
Up early, had breakfast, walk with Tuka and then we headed off to Denham. First there was 44km of dirt road and then 87km of sealed road.

Stopped off at Eagle Bluff, a lookout over a shallow bay in Shark Bay. I was supposed to see sharks and dolphins swimming below me. There was nothing.

Drove into Denham and contacted Kat and did the online paperwork to update insurance and registration of the van. After that Tuka and I had a walk and watched four emus wandering along the main road. Bought some water from the desalinisation plant (supplier of fresh water for Denham) at $1 for 15 litres.

Then drove out to Monkey Mia. Arrived after 12pm and found out that all the dolphin feeding is done in the morning. Tuka and I went for a walk along the beach and wandered around the Resort. Decided to stay the night and see the dolphins in the morning. As it was $16 per person for an unpowered site it was relatively cheap compared to powered ($35 to $50) - one advantage to being single.

Lots of emus wandering around the resort and especially the unpowered sites because of the tents with food in them or in front of them. The emus decided they didn't like Tuka. One stuck his head at the opened window of the van and tried to peck Tuka. Then as we were walking an emu raced down the the road pecking and hissing at Tuka. Later in the afternoon Tuka and I were sitting on the grass and the emus kept coming up to Tuka and pecking at him. An English backpacker helped me drive them off.

Tuka and I went to the Monkey Bar to recover and then back to the van for tea. Very strange to have all these people camping around us after a week of isolation at Snapper Rocks.
