Day 110 - 14 Mile Beach
14 Mile BeachWednesday, 8 May 2013
Woken up at 1am by wind, lightning, thunder and rain. During a lull in the storm I went out out and checked the camp site. The solar panels had blown over but everything else was ok. I listened and watched the storm until 2am. Woke up at 7am and checked the site. The solar panels had been blown away held only by the chain attached to the van. Luckily the kayak didn't have its skin on it so the kayak frame stayed in place during the night.
Went for a walk with Tuka down to the beach. There were people with 4wds on the beach trying to rescue the large boat that had been moored offshore but had been washed up on the shore half full of water. On the campers on the beach told me that 40 knot winds were predicted for this afternoon so they had to move the boat asap. She said campers had lost gazebos, awnings and outside toilets during the night.
Walked back to our site and than up to my nearest neighbours. They had been up in the night trying to reinforce their awning with additional ropes.
Back at the van had a cuppa and watched the waves crashing over the reef. Certainly not a good day for kayaking. Rest of the day walking, photographing and reading. Strong winds all day. Found out from one of the campers that there had been 80-90 km/h winds last night. No wonder the van rocked.
