Day 52 - Greens Island to Nannup
Greens Island, Glenoran Pool, Manjimup, Pemberton, Gloucester Tree, Northcliffe, Windy Harbour, Point D'Entrecasteaux, NannupMonday, 11 March 2013
Rain again. Said goodbye to the French couple.
Drove to Manjinup and called into the DEC Office and got some brochures and a small booklet on trees. Then to the Information Centre where I got some more brochures and bought some local Karri honey.
Went to JarrahJacks Brewery at Pemberton. Sign said it was open but when I got there it was closed. Drove into Pemberton and out to the Gloucester Tree in Gloucester National Park. The Gloucester Tree is a 60 metre high climbing tree which is used as a lookout tower to spot fires. I was told by the ranger at the entrance that it was ok to climb the tree even though it had been raining. Therefore I decided to climb it. It was ok as long as I didnt look down. Fantastic view from the top.
Then left Pemberton and onto Northcliffe and then through D'Entrecasteaux National Park to Windy Harbour. Windy Harbour comprises colourful fishing shacks and weekenders and a camping ground. The camping ground is flat and grassy complete with feeding Western Grey Kangaroos. A pity no dogs allowed. Drove up to Point D'Entrecasteaux in the National Park and photgraphed the crumbling limestone cliffs. Had a walk through the low coastal scrub and along the limestone cliffs.
Then drove 70km to Nannup through the coastal scrub, heathlands and then Karri and Jarrah forests. Very scenic drive. Nannup is a small town with half a dozen cafes, newsagent, grocery store, gift shops, a petrol station take aways, pub and council buildings. It has an atmosphere like Berry and Berrima although at present a lot less people.
Booked into the caravan park located next to the Blackwood River. Cheapest caravan park so far and complete with grassed site. After setting up Tuka and I walked around town and along the river.
