Cliff Head to Glenfield

Day 77 - Cliff Head to Glenfield

Cliff Head, Greenough, Geraldton, Glenfield

Friday, 5 April 2013
Decided to pack up a leave as I needed Optus reception as it was about to expire.

Called in at the Central Greenough Historic Settlement on the way to Geraldton. The buildings of Central Greenough were constructed between 1863 and 1913, are now conserved by the National Trust of Australia (WA). After looking trough the Settlement I stopped at the leaning tree and took some photos. Trees in Greenough lean due to the prevailng southerly winds.

Had a drive around Geraldton and then parked and called Greg. He is Wayne's friend from his days as a Prison Officer. He was home and invited me to his place. Tuka and I met Greg and Gucci. Gucci is Greg's fox terrier x jack russel dog and she fell in love with Tuka. Joyce, Greg's wife, was in Perth visiting relatives so Greg was baching for a week. After a chat Greg and Gucci went into town and left us to clean up.

When they returned we talked, drank and ate and then we went to Geraldton to see the National Memorial to the HMAS Sydney II at dusk. The Memorial is in memory of, and to honour the men of the HMAS Sydney II. "This magnificent memorial has become the country's premier site for honouring the 645 Australian sailors who were lost off the Western Australian coast during a World War II battle with a German raider in November 1941. RAN cruiser HMAS Sydney II and her men disappeared after a battle with German raider HSK Kormoran. While both ships were lost, many of the Kormoran crew survived the ordeal."

Moore River Bridge to Sandy Cape

Day 75 - Moore River Bridge to Sandy Cape

Moore River Bridge, Guilderton, Nilgen Nature Reserve, Cervantes, Sandy Cape

Wednesday, 3 April 2013
Woke up early, had breakfast and took Tuka for a walk. Said goodbye to some other campers, packed up and headed off by 8am.

Drove into Guildford and had a look around. Then drove to the Nilgen Nature Reserve. Lookout gives good views over the grass trees, banksias and heath plants.

Then onto Nambung National Park to see the Pinnacles. Thousands of limestone pillars, up to 4 m tall, rise out of the yellow Spearwood sands in forms that resemble tombstones and jagged, sharp-edged columns.

Then drove to Lake Thetis near the town of Cervantes to see the stromatolites. The stomatolites grow around the lake perimeter and are the oldest known living, single celled organisms. Short drive to the Hansen Bay Lookout which provides views of Hansen Bay and Cervantes.

Drove into Cervantes bought bread and milk and drove through Jurien Bay and then to Sandy Cove Recreation Park. I set up camp, had a swim with Tuka, said hello to the next door campers and their two dogs (one a chocolate lab) and then had a late lunch.

Another swim and then a walk on the sand dunes with Tuka. Saw emu tracks and then three emus on the sand dunes.

Afterwards we all went back to the house and got our swimming gear and went to Cottesloe Beach for a swim and then had lunch at the Cottsloe Hotel.

Back to Krystal and Willie's house where we watched tv, snoozed and Michael and Ashlee got ready for their flight. Said goodbye to Michael and Ashlee and then Krystal took them to the airport.

Alfred Cove to Fremantle

Day 71 - Alfred Cove to Fremantle

Alfred Cove, Kings Park, South Perth, Mill Point, Perth, Fremantle

Saturday, 30 March 2013
Visited the Old Mill in South Perth. It was built in 1835. Unfortunately it is was closed today so unable to look inside.

Went to the Botanic Garden in Perth. walked with Tuka around the State War Memorial, looked at the view of Perth CBD and the plants and then put Tuka in the van. I then walked to the 750 year old Boab Tree (Gija Jimula). It was transported 3200km from northern WA to Perth by truck. This was the longest land journey of a tree of this size in history". Then walked along the Federation Walkway and back to the van. Then drove around King Park. Stopped and had a couple of walks with Tuka.

Drove to Fremantle to meet Michael and Ashlee as they had flown to Perth this morning. Met Michael, Ash, Krystal (Ash's sister) and Willie (Krystal's boyfriend) at the Norfolk Hotel, Fremantle. First time Michael had seen me clean shaven in decades. Had lunch and a chat and then Willie led Michael and I on what turned out to be an afternoon craft beer pub crawl. One of the pubs was the Sail and Anchor where we tried beers by the Feral Brewing Company. Ash and Crystal went shopping and joined us at different pubs along the way.
